What is Vocal Comping?
Vocal Comping is the compilation of various vocal tracks. It’s an important and tricky part of the recording and production of songs. A good song line moves the listener and gives a song body. The right feeling in a song is more important than a flawless performance. The song needs to carry you along and needs to give you shivers. It should lift the song to a higher level. In short, the vocals need to be superb. Most of the time, multiple tracks are being sung to be able to find “The Take”. After that, a compilation is made from the best parts of the various takes. (It’s best to leave this job to a professional who has a fresh ear and who can look at the song and song lines with an unbiased point of view.
Why Vocal Comping?
Most of the time, the vocals are the last tracks to be recorded. Because a musician, singer, or producer is so close to the project, they may look for the ‘wrong’ things in the compilation process. A lot of times, the comping of vocals doesn’t get the attention that it deserves.
Vocal Comping was not present at the recording session and is able to lend a fresh ear when listening to the tracks. The choices Vocal Comp might make while compiling could be difficult for someone who was closely involved in the production. Thus the danger exists that you focus too closely on small things while forgetting about the larger picture. In the end, you want to have a smooth, perfect production AND you want your listener to have an emotional response to your music.
We at Vocal Comping have the experience and the sensibility to make sure that the vocals and thus the song exceeds itself.
